While the family of the deceased alleged that their son was murdered, the police said it appears to be suicide.
New Delhi: Mystery shrouds the death of a 22-year-old national hockey player, who allegedly shot himself outside the house of another hockey player in Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the incident came to light after a PCR call was received at 10.20 am regarding a body being found inside a car in GI Block of Saojini Nagar. Upon inquiry, the deceased was identified as Rizwan Khan, a resident of Tihar village.
While the family of the deceased alleged that their son was murdered, the police said it appears to be suicide.
Rizwan allegedly killed himself after meeting a girl, who is also a hockey player and stays with her family in Sarojini Nagar, said police.
“We have recovered a country made pistol from the deceased. No suicide note was found on the spot. Based on the preliminary report and taking into account the circumstances, it appears to be a case of suicide. Police has initiated the proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC and the body has been sent for the post mortem,” said DCP (South) Romil Baaniya.
The police might also question the female friend, who left the city early in the morning to play a match.
Shareef Khan, the father of the deceased, said that his son had left the house at 12.30 am in his car with '2 lakh cash in a bag.
An hour later, when he called Rizwan’s number, it was switched off.
He later tried his alternate number and a girl picked up.
“After repeated attempts, the girl’s father picked the call and gave their address. I went to Sarojini Nagar immediately, where the girl’s father handed over the bag of cash. Even he was curious about the so much cash inside his house,” said Mr Khan.
