New Delhi: The Delhi police unearthed a 50-feet-long cave which was used as a safe haven and shelter for burglars in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh. Six persons allegedly belonging to the “Guffa Gang”, who used to take shelter in the cave and hide the stolen booty there, were arrested, the police said on Friday.

While committing burglaries and robberies, they used surgical hand gloves in order to ensure that there were no fingerprints left at the crime scene, said Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (South).

“They are drug addicts. They revealed that they also used to visit call girls and in order to cater to the expenses incurred on drugs and lust, they started committing burglaries,” said the officer. The accused — Virender alias Gadwali (30), Kunal alias Kuldeep (24), Raju (25), Santosh Gupta alias Ghoda (32), Bablu alias Rajasthani (26), and Anand Kant alias Anu (26) — were arrested on Thursday around 4 pm from Prem Chand Ki Guffa behind Smriti Vatika Park, Moti Bagh-I.

With their arrest, 16 cases of burglary and robbery have been worked out. Police recovered stolen cash of Rs 50,000, 10 mobile phones, two laptops, 1 Nikon digital camera (worth Rs 3 lakh), 13 imported wrist watches, jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh, two motorcycles and one scooty.

The police team deployed sources to get clues about the burglars active in the area. On the basis of an input, the six accused were arrested after a trap was laid for them.

They were active in the areas of South Campus, Sarojini Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Chanakyapuri, Mandir Marg, Rajender Nagar, and RK Puram. They used to enter the houses through the windows and break open the locks with the help of an iron wrench and stole electronic items and cash.
