Speeding car kills cop at Dwarka post, driver held

Subsequently, the police registered an FIR at the concerned police station and took up investigation into the matter, the official sources said.

New Delhi: A 53-year-old Delhi police head constable (HC), who was on duty, was mowed down by a speeding car at a checkpost in Dwarka Sector-23 on Monday night. The police arrested the accused driver when he was getting his car repaired.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Guljari Lal, who was posted in Dwarka Sector-23 police station, while the accused has been identified as Nagesh Kapoor (33). The incident took place on at around 1  am on Tuesday when HC Guljari Lal, along with HC Prakash, was checking vehicles at a police picket in Sector-23 area.

“They saw a Baleno car coming towards them. They signalled the car to stop but the driver accelerated and fled, hitting the barricade at the picket. The barricade hit Guljari Lal on his neck. He was rushed to Venkteshwar Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” said DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse.

A case under Sections 186, 353, 279, 304A, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Dwarka Sector-23 police station. Police teams were dispatched to check car repair shops in Dwarka and adjoining areas to nab the accused, the senior officer said. “We approached the insurance agents and service stations to collect intelligence regarding the vehicle involved in the accident. The message was also circulated on WhatsApp and among RWAs in the area,” said the DCP. Based on specific input received from a mechanic in Pochanpur village about a car parked near a shop, a police team rushed to the spot and verified the car. “Subsequently, one of the accused was identified as Nagesh Kapoor (33), a resident of Pochanpur. During interrogation, the accused revealed that he was coming from Gurgaon after meeting his friends at around 1 am. When the police present at the picket tried to stop him for checking, he got sacred. In order to escape, he hit the police barricade,” the DCP added.

Guljari Lal had joined the police force in 1990. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. He was living in Najafgarh and was a native of Kotputli in Rajasthan. He was given guard of honour at Kotputli during his last rites, police said.
