DU grooms students with talent, passion for music
Delhi University (DU) makes it possible for every talented student to cultivate their passion for music and grow as eminent musicians.
New Delhi: A language of the soul, music expresses that which cannot be said in words. While for some music is just another way of leisure, for others it is an art and a skill that allows them to communicate with the world. Music may be an artistic pursuit, but making a career out of music is a dream of every singer and instrumentalist. Delhi University (DU) makes it possible for every talented student to cultivate their passion for music and grow as eminent musicians.
The varsity offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Hindustani Music – vocal/ instrumental, Carnatic music and vocal/instrumental and percussion music (tabla/pakhawaj) – besides offering them at MPhil and PhD levels.
This year, the varsity received nearly 2,189 applications for vocal music and 960 for instrumental music for the upcoming academic session.
Ramjas College, one of the most renowned colleges of North Campus, offers both BA (H) degree in music with 10 seats and MA degree with a total of 20 seats. The admissions to both these courses are made by DU’s department of music. The course covers a plethora of opportunities for students with hidden potential in music by providing them with a rich collection of books on music in the college library.
“Music is one of the best ways to express and develop creativity. You build a lot of maturity and intelligence by studying music because it takes patience and serious commitment,” Anisha Garg, a second year BA student, said.
However, in order to pursue the course, interested candidates need to have music as a subject in Class 12, or else they are required to produce certificates stating they have been learning music for at least three years. Aspirants will then have to take a performance entrance exam to seek admission in this course. After the performance entrance exam, the department assigns colleges to the students whose names appear in the merit list.
While Indraprastha College for Women offers a three-year BA degree with a maximum of 37 seats, Hindu College offers a 4-year full time BA (H) degree in music. Similarly, Miranda House and Daulat Ram College offer BA programme course in music and teach classical music (vocal) and instrumental (sitar) music, covering different areas of Hindustani Music, besides offering BA (H) and MA in music.
DU has given some of the famous musicians to the music industry, including KK, Shantanu Moitra, and Jaspinder Narula. It goes on to prove that it is a place which gives students an extra advantage to grow up individually.
