Vigilantes thrash man, hospitalised

New Delhi: In another case of mob vigilantism, a group of people thrashed a young man in South Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar suspecting him of being a cattle thief. The incident, which came to  light on Sunday, happened on on July 7. The injured man, Iftikhar Alam, said he was on his way to a Metro construction site when he was attacked by the mob. 

On Friday, at about 2 am, a PCR call was received at the Sarai Kale Khan police station with the caller informing that a buffalo thief had been apprehended. Head constable Yazuvender reached the spot to find Iftikhar held by local residents that alleged they saw three buffaloes tied together with Iftikhar standing near them with a tempo. 

After taking up the case, the police learnt that the injured, who was assaulted on grounds of suspicion, was a driver with J. Kumar Company. He had gone to a scrap dealer for some personal work only to be beaten up by the public. After conducting a preliminary probe, the police called officials of the company to the spot and the issue was amicably settled. The victim had refused medical examination initially. However, he was later admitted to Jeewan Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
