New Delhi: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to install 400 open gyms in its parks. SDMC mayor Shyam Sharma has asked the municipal councillors to identify parks under their respective wards for installation of the new open gyms.

Mr Sharma asked the horticulture department to act fast in this direction.

“The identification by the councillors will help SDMC install open gyms in such a manner to ensure uniform allocation of the gyms.  The new gyms will be installed within a month’s time. The SDMC is the only local body in Northern India which has taken up a project to enhance the look and image of its parks, apart from ensuring maximum footfall of the users,” said Mr Sharma.

There are more than 6,820 parks being maintained by the horticulture department under the SDMC and the parks are spread over an area of more than 2,200 acres.

According to Mr Sharma, the parks being maintained by the SDMC have been providing enormous opportunities to the citizens for their physical exercise, sports, entertainment, interaction on social issues apart from providing a serene environment to the walkers in the morning and evening.

He claimed that there is a dire need of more and more open gyms in the parks as the SDMC has been getting encouraging feedback from citizens about its utilisation and benefits.

“It has been noticed that 121 gyms are being properly used by the youth and other persons in different age groups; this has attracted even elders,” added Mr Sharma.
