New Delhi: A day after a 25-year-old man was thrashed by locals in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar for allegedly sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl, the man succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital on Saturday morning. The man, identified as Sanjay Kumar Giri alias Sonu, was on a ventilator in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

He took his last breadth around 5 am, said the police.

While a case of sexual assault under protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) act was already registered against Giri, another case of culpable homicide note amounting to murder was registered against unknown persons. Police officials said they will now identify and nab the persons who were involved in the attack.

Giri’s body was handed over to his family members after the autopsy.

His family members have alleged that he was killed by a group of persons for resisting a robbery. The police, however, have refuted their allegations.

A native of Basti in Uttar Pradesh, Giri lived with family in Shashi Garden area near Pandav Nagar. He worked as a carpenter. The girl’s family lives in Pandav Nagar area. Her mother is a street vendor and sells vegetables. On Thursday around 10.30 pm, the girl went to have snacks at roadside eatery. She was returning to her mother when Giri lured her to an isolated place near Sanjay Lake on some pretext.

When the girl did not return, her mother panicked and started looking for her in the locality. A local told her that he had seen a man taking her towards the lake. Around midnight, the mother along with some locals went towards the lake and found Giri forcing himself on the girl.

“The mob overpowered Giri and attacked him with stones and batons. They kept attacking him till he fell unconscious,” said a police officer adding the local police was informed about the incident. Giri was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital in a police van. Seeing his critical condition, doctors referred him to GTB hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.
