Delhi Metro card recharge limit raised to Rs 2,000
Facility available till December 31, says DMRC.
New Delhi: The Delhi Metro has temporarily increased the ceiling of smartcard recharge from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 from Sunday due to paucity of short change following demonetisation.
The facility will be available till December 31, DMRC said in a statement. The move will help staff who man the ticket counters as well as the commuters, the DMRC said.
“The decision to increase the maximum top up limit has been taken with a view to facilitate the commuters who might come with new currency notes of Rs 2,000 to top up their smart cards. With the present maximum top up ceiling of Rs 1,000, it would have created problem in the availability of adequate currency notes for passengers and currency to be returned to such passengers, especially in view of shortage of new Rs 500 currency notes,” a spokesperson with Delhi Metro said.
DMRC expects that by December 31, there will be enough currency of various denominations, specially Rs 500, the official said. Nearly 70 per cent of Metro’s daily commuters, averaging around 27-30 lakh daily, are smartcard users. The Metro system registers around two lakh top-ups per day.
The Delhi Metro at present carries about 27-30 lakh passengers daily
