Delhi Metro: Phase IV to link far-flung areas of city

New Delhi: Making further inroads into the city, the Delhi Metro in its fourth phase will provide connectivity to the far-flung and poorly connected areas including Narela, Bawana, Burari, Mukarba Chowk, and Khajuri Khas. With four new corridors and two extensions of the present corridors, the fourth phase will add 103.93 km to the Metro’s network, of which 37.01 km will be underground while 66.92 km will be elevated. Pegged at Rs 55,000 crore with an estimated ridership of 15 lakh passengers, the phase will also go deeper in the Old Delhi areas such as Sadar Bazar.

The third phase of Delhi Metro’s expansion is in the final stages of construction and is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Post this, once it receives approval, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will begin work on the fourth phase. After conducting the feasibility study, the Delhi Metro has also prepared a detailed project report of its phase IV expansion.

Delhi Metro chief Mangu Singh said that DMRC has sent a proposal of 103.93 km long expansion of its network in the fourth phase to the Delhi government and the Centre for approval. Four new lines will be constructed in Delhi Metro’s phase IV expansion including Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg, which is 28.92 km in length, Tughlaqabad to Terminal 1 (20.20 km), Indraprastha to Inderlok (12.57 km) and Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, whose length is 7.96 kilometers. The fourth phase will extend the two existing lines — Shiv Vihar to Mukundpur corridor in phase 3 will be extended by 12.54 km till Maujpur and the Dilshad Garden to Rithala line will be extended by 21.73 km till Narela.
