EDMC proposes 3 new taxes to earn revenue

New Delhi: The BJP-ruled East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has proposed to impose three new taxes — betterment tax (15 per cent on property’s annual value), education cess (5 per cent on property’s annual value), and professional tax on annual earning of Rs 5 lakh and above — to recover losses.
Presenting the Budget proposal for the next financial year in the EDMC’s standing committee, commissioner Dr Puneet Kumar Goel on Monday proposed to build 13 new schools in East Delhi.
Mr Goel said this while presenting the EDMC’s revised Budget estimates for 2018-19 and 2019-20 at the civic centre.
Mr Goel said, “Increase in income from property tax is likely to fetch Rs 271 crore as property tax. For the financial year 2018-19, EDMC has set a target of Rs 314 crore in respect to income from property tax and Rs 133.20 crore has been collected upto November 20, 2018.
“EDMC has 83 surface parking lots. From these, Rs 31.73 crore has been collected in 2017-18. In the financial year 2018-19, a target of Rs 50 crore has been fixed against which Rs 22 crore has been collected till November 2018.” “In the current financial year, for the release of health trade license by October 2018, revenue of Rs 240 lakh has been realised. Apart from this, about Rs 22 lakh have been collected by conducting 280 raids for the regulation of health business and 7,714 prosecutions have been conducted against the violators of health trade related conditions. Through advertisement, Rs 9 crore has been collected till 27 November, 2018, against a target of Rs 25 crore,” added Mr Goel.
Later, while interacting with reporters, Mr Goel said that work order has been issued to develop multi-storey car parking in Preet Vihar at a cost of about Rs 36 crore.
