Water crisis to worsen due to rise in ammonia

NEW DELHI: The water crisis in the national capital has worsened with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) saying that there will be water shortage in the city for the next few days.

The three water treatment plants of Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Haiderpur have not been running at full capacity since January 30 due to high levels of ammonia in the Yamuna.

“Due to continuous pollution in river Yamuna and reduction in release of raw water by Haryana in Delhi Sub-Branch and Munak Canal, the production of water treatment plants of Delhi has been adversely affected. The Delhi Jal Board is endeavouring to rationalise the water supply. Therefore, water will be available at low pressure for coming few more days, till the situation improves,” said a statement released by the water utility on Monday.

For the past 14 days, water supply has been affected in all parts of the city except in East Delhi, where water is sourced from the upper Ganga Canal and not from Haryana.

The Delhi Jal Board  said that supply will be available at low pressure in North, West, South, and Central Delhi.
