Cops harass complainant from Northeast

New Delhi: Some Delhi police officials allegedly victimised a Northeast girl who had gone to lodge a molestation case at the Tilak Marg police station. The cops allegedly asked her to not use words like “harass” and “molestation” in her complaint as she is not “aware of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).”

Her trauma did not end there; the girl was also made to wait for hours by the cops who were also reportedly trying to convince her to not lodge the FIR. The victim has complained to the Delhi police commissioner, Amulya Patnaik, against the cops for misbehaving with her and forcing her to sign a complaint written by them.  

According to a police source, the victim said that she was molested and harassed by an employee of a renowned art institute. She lodged an online case in this respect and was subsequently called by the police to appear physically before them to get her statement recorded. But when she reached the Tilak Marg police station, the cops, who were looking after her case, allegedly misbehaved with her. Speaking to this newspaper, the victim said that Sunil Kumar, the sub inspector (SI) of the police station, allegedly mentally tortured her. She has alleged in her complaint written to Mr Patnaik that Mr Kumar, in a bid to save the accused, made her sign a pre-written bogus complaint.

“I was made to wait for hours. When I was going through a copy of my online complaint, the cops snatched it. Mr Kumar tried to snatch my cell phone, to which I objected. It was a mental trauma for me. I was also not given the FIR copy by the cops,” the victim said. 

Speaking to this newspaper, B.K. Singh, the DCP of New Delhi, said that the girl was only asked to surrender her cell phone.

“As per legal formality, we asked her to surrender her cell phone so that we could use it as evidence because the case was being lodged under the IT Act. If the case was being lodged only under Section 354 of the IPC, we would not ask her to surrender her phone,” Mr Singh said.
