Man sets house on fire, parents killed

Another neighbour claimed he used to forcibly take money from his mother and often create ruckus in and around the house.

New Delhi: A “mentally-disturbed” 40-year-old man allegedly let his elderly parents burn alive after setting his house on fire in west Delhi's Moti Nagar. The accused started the fire that killed his parents, Chedi Lal (70) and Laxmi (62), in the early hours of Friday, and fled from the spot.

The accused was later identified as Santosh, who has been caught and sent to judicial custody, said the police. Vinay, who was staying with the couple as a tenant, also got injured, while trying to rescue the couple.

Police said that the fire broke out at 3.25 am on the ground floor of the building in which the elderly couple receibved burn injuries. They were admitted to a hospital where they were declared brought dead.

It was the injured tenant who informed the police that he saw the couple’s son fleeing from the spot.

A senior police officer said that their tenant was also injured, while trying to save the couple .

“Santosh has been arrested. It was found that he is mentally disturbed, and would harass his parents for money and fight with them over petty issues,” the officer added.s

The son who allegedly set the house on fire is mentally disturbed. He had fled the scene after the incident. The injured neighbour had told the police that he saw the mentally ill person flee from the spot. Locals claimed the couple’s son used to physically abuse his parents.

The couple was staying in a 2 BHK house and Lal ran a chaat shop. The couple’s other children expressed suspicion about their brother's involvement in the incident and said that he would beat his parents and torture them, police said.
