Neighbour arrested for raping 60-year-old woman
The accused was lodged in jail in connection with a theft case but was out on bail.
New Delhi: A 60-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her neighbour who barged into her shanty in an inebriated condition in south Delhi’s Mehrauli on Saturday night.
The police said the accused Sanjay, 35, was drunk when he gained entry into the woman’s house and assaulted her. He also threatened to kill her when she resisted the assault. She was alone at home during the incident.
“The accused Sanjay was arrested on Sunday after the woman’s family members approached the Mehrauli police. Medical examination of the woman confirmed sexual assault,” said a senior police official.
A police officer said that initially the woman was reluctant to file the complaint fearing that the case would tarnish her image in the society.
Fearing social stigma, she did not even informed her family members about it for almost 12 hours. However, the incident started haunting her and she was going into depression.
The woman initially tried to hide everything but when her daughter insisted, she broke down and narrated her ordeal. The daughter informed her husband and the couple brought the woman to the police station and registered FIR against neighbou. During the interrogation, Sanjay confessed to the crime.
