Woman thrashed by locals for theft, dies in hospital

The family of the deceased has accused police of beating the victim leading to her death, following which a magisterial probe has been initiated.

New Delhi: A 37-year-old woman succumbed after being thrashed by locals when she, along with her associate, was caught red-handed while allegedly stealing at a godown of pressure cooker in outer north Delhi’s Samaipur Badli area.

The incident took place on Wednesday when a group of around seven-eight women entered into the godown after breaking the wall.

While they were engaged in the process of stealing items, two women were caught by the labourers present at the spot following which a scuffle broke out between them, police said.

The two women were allegedly beaten up by the labourers and the locals. Meanwhile, the other women managed to flee from the spot, police said.

When police reached the spot, one of the injured women complained of uneasiness, following which she and her accomplice were admitted in Ambedkar hospital.

The women duo were then arrested from the hospital and presented before the magistrate, Gaurav Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (outer north) said. After the magistrate ordered their judicial custody, the 37-year-old woman was again taken to hospital after she complained of uneasiness. She succumbed during treatment, Mr Sharma added.

Police, however denied the allegations. She was not made to visit any police station and was arrested from the hospital and presented before the magistrate, the DCP said.
