New Delhi: With a total of 12, 914 students applying this year under the sports quota for admission to Delhi University, the varsity is all set to begin with the sports trials from June 27.
This year, about 1,557 candidates had applied for football quota, leaving behind cricket, which received 1,087 applications. About 1,411 candidates have chosen basketball, 1,353 students’ athletics and 1,143 candidates chose volleyball.
However, the varsity officials said due to the high level of competition in several coveted courses for a spot in cricket may have led many students applying for other sports over cricket.
The university this year has also decided to increase the weightage of the trial marks to 60 per cent. However, in a bid to prevent malpractices during trials, they will be videographed.
Candidates who have represented the country in international sports events, such as Olympics, world championships, world cups, Commonwealth, or Asian Games, will be allowed direct admission without trial.
In sports involving physical combat, the maximum applications were received for Taekwondo with 461 applications, 313 applications for Judo, 283 and 93 applications for boxing and wrestling respectively. Trials for a specific game or sport, as identified by the DU Sports Council, will be conducted by colleges independently.
