3 AIIMS doctors killed in Yamuna E-way mishap

NEW DELHI: A birthday celebration of one of the resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) turned fatal after the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a canter at around 2.30 am early Sunday.

In the accident, three AIIMS doctors, including two women, were killed and four others injured on Yamuna Expressway near Mathura.

The seven doctors, posted as resident doctors in emergency medicine department of the AIIMS, were travelling to Agra from Delhi in an SUV to celebrate the birthday of one Dr Harshad Wankhade, who was also killed in the accident.

According to a spokesperson, three resident doctors identified as Dr Yashprit (25) and Dr Hembala (about 25), and Dr Harshad (35) were killed on-the-spot, while four others identified as  Dr Catherine, Dr Jitendra, Dr Mahesh, Dr Abhinav were injured.

The police immediately rushed the injured doctors  to Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS for treatment.

The doctors said that a team of doctors in Delhi operated on Dr Catherine, who had suffered B/L hip dislocation. The injured were later referred to the AIIMS trauma centre, superintendent of police (rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said.

Meanwhile Dr Randeep Guleria, director, AIIMS, New Delhi has expressed condolences on the untimely and unfortunate demise of the three resident doctors.

Such was the impact that the speeding SUV after ramming the canter, partially entered into it, Mr Shukla said, adding three of them succumbed to injuries on the spot, while four injured doctors were rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

According to doctors in the apex hospital, all the four injured doctors are stable. One of the injured doctors suffered a face bone fracture and injuries to the hips, while another doctor suffered a wrist fracture. Two other doctors suffered minor bruises, they said.

He said help could be provided to them as they were informed about the accident through dial 100. The canter driver abandoned his vehicle and fled.
