Shalimar Bagh SHO, cops attacked

Scuffle erupted after police tried to resolve dispute 9 persons arrested.

New Delhi: Four policemen, including a station house officer attached to Shalimar Bagh, were allegedly beaten with wooden sticks last Thursday by a group of nine persons when they went to resolve a dispute between two groups.

The police later arrested the nine persons identified as Wasim, Wahid, Aasif, Hasim, Mehboob, Pawan, Naresh, Ravi and Sajid Khan The incident took place in Shalimar Bagh slums in U and V pockets on the intervening night of July 13 and July 14. 

According to the police, a call was made to the control room regarding a scuffle which had broken out between the two groups over alleged eve-teasing. Soon, the station house officer along with two constables and a driver rushed to the spot. However, the four policemen were attacked by the unruly men and a woman named Halki Devi launched an attack on a police party with wooden sticks.

In the melee, constable Rajendra sustained head injuries while his uniform was torn by the frenzied mob. In his complaint, the constable said the two groups, over an eve-teasing issue which took place on the evening of July 12, had got involved in a scuffle and the matter had slipped out of hand when they began to physically assaulting each other. As the SHO, along with constable Rajendra and two others, went to the slums, a frenzied mob obstructed and dettered them from carrying out their duties.

“As we enetered the area, three to four persons obstructed our way and didn’t let us carry out our work. When the SHO asked them not to block the way and let the police do their duty, the mob began pushing us. Meanwhile, a woman, who was armed with a wooden log hit my head following which I fell on the ground. When the senior officer on duty came to rescue me, the woman along with the others attacked him,” said constable Rajendra. 

The mob surrounded us and began assaulting us. However, the timely intervention by the driver who had called the station and brought additional police saved us from the unruly mob. The injured policemen were taken to the nearby hospital. The Shalimar Bagh police registered a case against the nine persons Under Sections 354, 509, 323, 341/34 of Indian penal code.
