NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, which are due early next year, senior Delhi Congress leaders on Monday met Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

Party’s Delhi unit in-charge P.C. Chacko and state working presidents Rajesh Lilothia and Harun Yusuf reportedly discussed various issues with Ms Gandhi.

It was a courtesy meeting with Ms Gandhi as she has become the interim president of Indian National Congress.

Among the various issues discussed during the meeting, “the Congress interim president expressed her grief over demolishment of a temple of Sant Guru Ravidas in Tughlakabad following which protests were held in Delhi and Punjab. After becoming the interim president Ms Gandhi held a meeting and asked about the current socio-political scenario in Delhi and while briefing her the issue regarding the demolishment of Sant Ravidas Temple came up. Upon hearing this she was shocked and expressed her grief,” Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee working president Rajesh Lilothia said, “Several other important topics and problems were also discussed during the meeting and Sonia Ma’am patiently heard the issues and told us that everything will be resolved”, Mr Lilothia added.

As the Delhi Congress is going through the leadership crisis after the sudden demise of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, some congress leaders said that there is a dire need for a new DPCC president ahead of the Assembly elections.

The Congress insiders also claimed that, the new DPCC president should be the one who has served congress wholeheartedly and should be the one who knows and understands Delhi and Delhiites.

The DPCC president should not be a parachute or helicopter president, Congress workers added.
