Chandigarh: Opening a new confrontation within the AAP, its NRI teams from across the world on Wednesday backed Leader of the Opposition Sukhpal Khaira on the Sikh Referendum 2020 issue and sought the ouster of Punjab co-convenor Balbir Singh for questioning Mr Khaira on the issue.

In an open letter to Delhi deputy chief minister and Punjab political affairs in-charge Manish Sisodia, the NRI teams from almost all countries, including the USA, Canada, European countries, Australia and New Zealand, said Mr Khaira had rightly raised the issue of atrocities against Sikhs and the party should back him.

The letter carried names of 36 NRI leaders. They said Mr Khaira had justified the Sikh demand for justice, saying that he is an Indian and owed allegiance to the Indian Constitution.

They sought the immediate removal of AAP leader Balbir Singh arguing that he had issued media statements without checking Mr Khaira’s version of the news reports. They also sought his removal for the party’s defeat in the Shahpur bypoll where the AAP polled only 1,100 votes.

Mr Balbir in a tweet on Monday had claimed that he had called up Mr Khaira five times for cross-checking his statement on the Sikh Referendum.
