Crime continues unabated in capital

NEW DELHI: Living up to its dubious distinct, the outer district of national capital once again topped the charts concerning heinous crimes being committed in the area while crime against women and children continues unabated in the city.

According to the data released by Praja foundation on Thursday, incidences of rape continue to be escalating, with 2207 cases reported in 2017-2018, a three per cent rise from the previous year. Out of total rape cases, 52 per cent are under POCSO.

Similarly, there were 5757 cases of kidnapping in 2017-18. In 65 per cent cases, victims were women and out of 496 abduction cases, 63 per cent victims were women.

The data further showcased that, there were 1137 cases under POCSO Act in 2017-18.

The highest number of murder and attempt to murder cases were reported in the outer district of national capital in 2018 while northwest district recorded the highest number of theft cases in the same period, states the data.

There were 108 cases of murder and attempt to murder, 308 cases of rape and 382 cases of molestation, 1023 cases of kidnapping/abduction, 1001 cases of burglary and 896 cases of accident including fatal accidents were reported in outer district. The highest number of POCSO act was reported in the outer district.

The highest number of cases registered is of theft, with 75,728 cases in 2017-18, which is an increase of 82 per cent from the previous year. The northwest district reported the highest registration of theft cases (8,641).

Similarly northeast district reported highest number of riots and dacoity. There were 514 cases of dacoity and 9 cases of riots in the district.

Average percentage share of fatal accidents to total road accidents has been 21 per cent from 2013 to 2017, with 8,288 people dying due to road accidents in Delhi in the past five years.

It was also stated by the data that, 40 per cent of the respondents do not feel secure in Delhi whereas 50 per cent feel that Delhi is not secure for women, children and senior citizens.

While 68 per cent of respondents who witnessed crime and informed police were not satisfied with response of police officials while 67 per cent of those who faced crime and informed police were not satisfied with police’s response.
