New Delhi: A 32-year-old man “accidentally” shot himself dead while “fiddling” with a gun at Sangam Vihar area. The incident took place on Monday night when the man, removing the magazine of the gun and allegedly placing it on his head, pulled the trigger in jest. A shot was fired from the pistol, injuring him.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Amit Kumar (32), a resident of Sangam Vihar.

DCP (South) Vijay Kumar stated that a medico legal case (MLC) call was received at Sangam Vihar police station at around 1.30 am on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday from Batra Hospital.

“During investigation, it was revealed that on Monday night, Amit had gone to meet a friend, identified as Bablu, at Gandhi Camp in Sangam Vihar. The two of them reportedly consumed beer before deciding to leave for Amit’s residence. On their way, Amit asked Bablu to stop at the house of another friend, identified as Rajnish,” said the DCP.

During the visit, Rajnish saw the weapon Amit was concealing in his clothes. He enquired about the same and started questioning Amit, who insisted that he was keeping the gun only for his protection and that nothing would happen to him.

To validate his statement, Amit allegedly took out the gun and removed the magazine. Subsequently, he placed it on his temple and pulled the trigger.

“Rajnish reportedly tried to stop Amit, as did Bablu. However, Amit pulled the trigger. A shot was fired, which injured him,” said the DCP, adding that he was immediately rushed to Batra Hospital by two men identified as Sumit and Rahul, who happened to be sitting on the street nearby.

In the meantime, Bablu collected the weapon and rushed to Amit’s house and informed his brother about the incident, the DCP disclosed.

“Amit was referred to AIIMS Trauma Center, where he later died during treatment,” the DCP said.

A case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act was registered.
