1,554 women abducted from Delhi this year

While 97 murders were reported till March 15 last year, a total of 205 murder cases have been reported till May 31, 2017, the police said.

New Delhi: With news of murders, gangrapes and burglaries hitting headlines regularly, the indicator of crime situation in the city has seen a rise in the last five months as compared to that of last year. Every hour, around 28 crime cases are registered across the city. However, the cases of kidnapping of women have risen in the city this year as compared to last year. While 1,462 cases of kidnapping of women were registered till May 31, 2016, the city registered over 1,554 such cases till May 31, 2017.

The Delhi police data, however, showed that crimes against women have gone down with 836 registered rape cases till May 31, 2017, as against 924 cases registered in 2016.

However, robberies and thefts in residential areas have increased this year. Since January, 2017, there has been a rise in the number of murders, burglary and theft cases in the national capital.  

The number of snatching cases has shot up in the first quarter of the year 2017 as compared to that of last year; motor vehicle thefts have seen an upward trend; and the number of burglary cases has gone marginally up till May 31, 2017, with over 5,949 cases being registered against 5,115 cases till May 31, 2016. According to a police official, over 90 to 100 vehicles are stolen in a day on an average in the national capital.

Fatal accidents on roads have shown a steep decline. While a total number of 642 cases were reported till May 31, 2016, over 545 cases have been registered till May 31, 2017.

A total number of 1,548 fatal accidents were reported across the city. Other accident cases also saw a decrease from 2,471 till May 31, 2016, to 2, 249 as of May 31, 2017.
