DCW helps captive woman to be reunited with husband

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has reunited a woman with her husband after three years of separation. The woman was being held captive by her family.

Acting on the complaint of a 25-year-old man, an engineer by profession, the DCW sent a team to rescue his wife from her parent’s house where she was in captivity for the last three years.

The husband of the 24-year-old woman had written an email to Swati Maliwal, requesting her for help as his wife’s parents were not allowing her to live with him.

He said that the two of them have been in a relationship for the last six years and got married three years ago. Suspecting their relationship, the woman’s parents imposed a curfew on his wife.

A team from DCW, together with the duty officer of the local police station, went to the house. They found the victim in a bad condition. She was frequently beaten up and kept in a room alone.

Crying profusely, the victim told the officials that all she wanted was to be with her husband.

The parents and the extended family of the woman tried to forestall the DCW team by calling a couple of lawyers, who argued against the sanctity of the marriage.

However, after much altercation, the parents were convinced that they had no choice. The woman was handed over to her husband after due paperwork.
