New Delhi: After the gangwar of Gogi and Tillu gangs that gave police sleepless nights, there are two other infamous gangs, led by Abdul Nasir (31) of Jafrabad and Irfan alias Chennu Pehalwan (32) of Seelampur, which are presently active in North-East Delhi. The two gangs have been fighting for supremacy in the area over the cricket betting business etc since 2012.
At present, both Nasir and Chennu are lodged in Tihar Jail. But, according to police, the Nasir and Chennu gangs are involved in almost every criminal activity that takes place in trans-Yamuna area. People still allege that both gang leaders plan gangwars and shootouts among others from inside the jail.
According to police sources, the gang war began in 2012 after Nasir, with four associates killed Chennu’s friend, Akil. “After Akil’s death, Chennu took over the gang. He and his associates were involved in cases of extortion, robbery, murder and attempt to murder,” a police officer said.
The police suspect that Wajid, who worked as a financer and property dealer provided financial support to Nasir, who is facing a dozen criminal cases, was shot dead two months ago by Chennu’s men in retaliation.
Two months ago, Nasir’s men allegedly shot dead two of Chennu’s associates. The police suspect, Chennu’s men, in retaliation, killed Mohammad Wajid (35) and Mohammad Arif Hussain (23) in Brahmpuri and Bhajanpura in a span of four hours in October 2017.
In December 2015, the Nasir gang members attempted to kill Chennu, while he was produced at Karkardooma court. Chennu was in judicial custody then.
He was being escorted to the hearing by constable Ram Kumar. As soon as the cop entered the courtroom with Chennu in tow, four juveniles from the Nasir’s gang opened fire. Three bullets hit the constable, who died on-the-spot. Chennu and a court clerk were injured in the firing.
Many small-time criminals of Delhi and western UP became big gangsters by joining the business of Chaudhary Matin, who once ran the biggest racket mafia in Delhi. Most of them have been murdered. During the past three years, more than two dozen gangsters were killed from both gangs in the city.
