New Delhi: A massive fire broke out at a garments godown at North Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar area in the early hours of Wednesday. Although no casualties were reported in the mishap, locals claimed that the fire gutted down the godown which stored garments worth crores of rupees.
According to fire department officials, the incident was reported at around 6:30am. Initially, 15 fire tenders were pressed into service.
However, till the filing of this report, 28 fire tenders had been pressed into service to fight the blaze.
The official added that it took more than four hours to douse the flames and by 5pm, the fire was completely extinguished.
Sources said that at least 20 warehouses in three buildings perished in the blaze.
Local residents in the area claimed that they had allegedly notified the Delhi Fire Service almost immediately after the fire started in a warehouse that held garments for export.
However, it took the fire department trucks over an hour to reach the designated spot by which time the fire had spread to two other buildings, claimed local residents.
A fire department official said that they are yet to establish the exact cause of the fire.
In the preliminary investigation, it appears that the fire broke out due to a probable short-circuit in the building.
