New Delhi: A massive cleanliness drive was taken up by New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area on Saturday, after 30,000 schoolchildren hit the streets early Saturday spreading the message of ‘cleanliness is next to godliness.’

The students, raising Swachhta slogans and holding cleanliness placards, spread the message of making the capital clean and green during Swachhta Rallies undertaken in lanes, bye-lanes, streets, market, and residential complexes.

The children distributed pamphlets about 'do's and don'ts' for Swachhta to sensitise the citizens about personal hygiene and how to make the city liveable, clean and environment-friendly.

NDMC chairperson, Naresh Kumar said,  “The children are little Swachhta Doots (messengers) and they can play a role in the society for transforming New Delhi area into a hygienic, liveable and healthy environment by motivating their family members to make Swachhta Mission into a mass movement.”

Joining hands with the schoolchildren, all NDMC departments have launched a massive sanitation drive on Saturday in which 5,000 NDMC employees participated.

The horticulture department pruned the trees and removed the waste from parks, gardens and road sides, while the civil engineering department employees painted the footpath, railings, crossing and removed the garbage.

While the NDMC, road division cleaned the road signs and marks, the electrical department employees painted street poles, junction boxes and electrical items on the road sides. The 2,500-strong workforce of health department actively participated in the drive by removing garbage, from lanes, bye-lanes and roadside.

The schoolchildren were supported by the NDMC, several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Market Traders’ Associations (MTAs) who later in the day joined in the cleanliness drive.
