New Delhi: Delhi University's Hansraj College on Wednesday hoisted a monumental flag on its campus, almost a year after Central university vice-chancellors decided to fly the Tricolour atop a 207-feet mast in all their premises to evoke nationalistic sentiments on campuses.

According to the Flag Foundation of India, DU is the first public university in the country to get a monumental flagpole.

The resolution to install the national flag on campuses was adopted on February 18 last year at a meeting chaired by then HRD Minister Smriti Irani with an aim of "instilling nationalism and pride" in students.

The decision had come against the backdrop of a controversy over alleged shouting of anti-India slogans being raised at a event in JNU.

The 100-ft high flag was hoisted at Hansraj college today by Naveen Jindal, Member of Parliament and President, Flag Foundation of India.

"Being an alumnus of Hans Raj College, I am extremely elated that it is the first college in Delhi University to have installed a monumental Flag. Tiranga belongs to all of us equally. When a person displays his national flag, he rises above political, social or religious affiliations," he said. The monumental flag is made of knitted polyester fabric called 'Deneir Polyester'. The Chakra of the flag is printed by using specialized printing process.

Flag Foundation has so far installed 52 monumental flagpoles of 100 feet high and 12 monumental flagpoles of 207 feet high across the length and breadth of the country.

In all, it has installed 65 monumental flagpoles in India, which is the highest number in the world for a country.

Besides India, there are 13 more countries, which have got such monumental flagpoles.
