New Delhi: Nineteen members of a family were injured when a bus carrying them from a wedding party was hit by a truck in Southwest Delhi’s Cantonment area early on Tuesday.

“Three women are undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital while rest of the injured persons were discharged after preliminary treatment. The injured women are out of danger,” said a senior police official. The police said that after the accident, both the errant drivers of the truck and bus fled from the spot and are yet to be arrested.

The deputy commissioner of police (Southwest district), Surender Kumar, said that the bus had 19 occupants, all of whom were returning to their homes in South Delhi after attending a wedding in West Delhi’s Mayapuri on Monday night.

The injured include two women and a man, all relatives of the groom who lives with his family in Lajpat Nagar. The injured has been identified as Laxmi (45), Upasana (34), and Sajid (30). Both the women were admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and Sajid was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital. The police said that everyone is out of danger.

The impact of the collision was such that both the vehicles overturned at the traffic intersection. The drivers of both the bus and truck abandoned their vehicles after the accident and fled.

The accident created chaos in the area and the locals informed the police. Thereafter, a police team reached the spot and took the injured to the hospitals.

The police official further said that they are still ascertaining the exact sequence of events that resulted in the collision. “Though the truck driver appears to be at fault, it is not a case of jumping the traffic signal,” Mr Kumar said. He said that fog could also have caused the accident. A case regarding the matter was registered at the Delhi Cantt police station under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code. No arrests have been made in the case yet and further investigation in the matter is on.
