City stands 2nd in ATM frauds after Maharashtra: RBI
RBI has also issued guidelines for preventing bank frauds and suitably protecting the interest of customers.
New Delhi: Delhi stands second in the country, only after Maharashtra, when it comes to ATM frauds.
According to the RBI data, the figure has gone up by 35 per cent in the national capital in the year 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18. The data compiled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) includes states and Union Territories where ‘ATM/debit card’ frauds amounting over Rs 1 lakh and above have been reported during 2017-18 and 2018-19.
According to the data, 179 cases of ATM frauds were registered here in the national capital in 2018-19 while 132 cases were registered in 2017-18. A total loss of Rs 2.87 crore was suffered due to card fraud in 2018-19 while the figure was Rs 2.81 crore in 2017-18.
However, in Maharashtra there was a dip of over three per cent as 233 cases of ATM frauds were registered in 2018-19 while 242 cases were registered in 2017-18. People suffered a loss of Rs 4.81 crore in 2019-18, which came down by Rs 5.19 crore in 2017-18.
In Tamil Nadu, there was a rise of over 12 per cent in the ATM fraud cases, where 147 cases were registered in 2018-19 while 131 cases were registered in 2017-18. While a loss of Rs 3.63 crore was suffered in 2018-19, people were cheated of Rs 37.55 crore in 2017-18.
RBI has also issued guidelines for preventing bank frauds and suitably protecting the interest of customers. Banks have been directed to examine fraud cases and report them to law enforcement agencies.
The customers will have zero liability in case of unauthorised transactions taking place due to contributory fraud, negligence, deficiency on the part of the bank, and due to third party breach provided they notify the bank regarding the unauthorised transactions within three working days of receiving the communication from the bank regarding the transaction.
