New Delhi: Recognising that odour management is in its nascent stage in the country, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has highlighted the importance of odour monitoring at the landfill sites that not only cause nuisance, but also has adverse impact on the health.

The CPCB conducted a pilot study of the odour emanating from the Ghazipur landfill and has recommended the use of odour control technology at such sites and the adoption of preventive measures for the abatement of odour. 

The study report has noted that segregation of the municipal solid waste (MSW) must be adopted appropriately, particularly at the source, in order to implement the preventive measures for odour generation. The main odourous compounds according to the report are ammonia, mercaptans, and butyric acid.

The study said that the concentration of such odourous emission can be minimised by adopting appropriate carbon-nitrogen ratio in the MSW landfill system and operating the landfill in such a way that the population of sulphur reducing microorganisms are maintained rationally.
