New Delhi: A labourer was killed in an accident on Sunday when the pipe of a boiler  in the railways’ mechanised laundry broke and hit him on the head. The mechanised laundry washes Railway Hospital linen and is located behind Northern Railway Central Hospital (NRCH) in the city.

The operation and maintenance of this laundry is outsourced to a Contractor Laundraid, a statement from the Northern Railways said.

“Today afternoon, the outlet pipe of the boiler broke and a piece of this pipe hit the head of  Pradeep, aged 37 years. He was brought to the NRCH where the hospital doctors gave him immediate treatment and did all possible medical interventions and procedures to stabilise his condition,” the statement said.

Since he had a severe injury to the head, the railway doctors referred him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RMLH), the statement added.

“While the accident victim was in the RMLH, the doctors made all-out efforts to improve his condition, but the labourer’s condition deteriorated and he  succumbed,” spokesperson of Northern Railways (NR) Nitin Chowdhary said.

Meanwhile, the NR general manager (GM) and the DRM visited the accident site, he said. A senior officer-level enquiry has been ordered by the GM.
