First-time Delhi University voters looking for strong govt

Delhi University's admission committee is yet to decide on the agency that will conduct the entrance exams for admission to various courses in the varsity, leading to a delay in the start of the process.

New Delhi: The young voters of Delhi University, who will be exercising their franchise for the first time, are keen to have a strong government at the Centre that can take quick decisions in the interest of the country.

All the political parties are trying to woo the first-time voters, who have resulted in a sharp rise in the turnout in the 18-25 age group. The rise has been from 54 per cent in the 2009 Lok Sabha election to 68 per cent in 2014.

It is the first time in Indian electoral history that the turnout of first-time voters is higher than the overall voting. This year, the data may increase in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections with over 1.5 crore first-time voters being added this year.

“With the airstrike on Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the current government has now set a new bar in dealing with cross-border terrorism,” said a student.
