Former state YC chief quits BJP, returns to Congress
Asked why he had quit Congress, Mr Malik said that he had taken the step due to some personal differences.
New Delhi: Two days ahead of Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s first public rally in the capital, the party's Delhi unit got a shot in the arm with former state unit youth wing head Amit Malik returning back to the party fold on Friday.
About a year ago, Mr Malik along with former state unit head Arvinder Singh Lovely, had dumped the Congress to join the BJP just before the crucial civic elections. While Mr Lovely joined the Congress back a few months ago, Mr Malik along with former youth wing leaders — Jai Karan Chaudhary and Parimder Sharma — returned back on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken said there were many other leaders from other parties who too were keen to join the party. But, he said, we will allow them to join the party after holding deliberations within the party.
Asked why he had quit Congress, Mr Malik said that he had taken the step due to some personal differences. “I am back because I was ideologically unfit in BJP. After meeting Mr Gandhi, I am back to my own party.”
On Mr Gandhi's first public meeting as the party president, Mr Maken claimed that about 1.5 lakh workers from across the country were expected to participate in the rally at Ramlila Maidan on April 29.
He said that for party's Delhi unit workers, forms had been issued. “One has to fill up the form along with his or her photograph. The exercise is being done to provide I-cards to the workers who want to join the historic rally."
Mr Maken said that the I-card will have a bar code which will help the party to get each and every detail about the worker. He claimed 40,000 workers had already applied for the I-card. Mr Maken said different committees have been set up to ensure there was no inconvenience to any worker.
"We are making special arrangements for drinking water and parking lots."
