Man jumps to death at Bawana police station

New Delhi: A 58-year-old man died after he allegedly jump from the third floor balcony of Bawana police station in Outer Delhi on Sunday, where he was called for questioning regarding the whereabouts of his absconding son who is wanted in multiple cases.

The deceased has been identified as Balraj, a resident of Bajitpur Thakran near Bawana, said officials.

The son of the deceased, Rahul, is involved in two cases of attempted murder as well as another case of murder and has been declared an absconder by a city court.

The Delhi police has suspended one constable and sent one ASI to district lines in connection with the incident.

The police, however, denied allegations that the victim was beaten up at the police station.

The incident took place at around 7.30 pm on Sunday when Balraj was called to Bawana police station. He was questioned about the whereabouts of his son, said DCP (Outer North) Gaurav Sharma.

Mr Sharma said Balraj was questioned in the presence of his son-in-law and a few others.  

The officer said that no suicide note has been found. Balraj’s elder son, Sunil, said that his father was taken to the police station by two policemen at around 11.00 am for questioning. No one was at home at that time. Later, the deceased’s wife, who was working in a factory, was also called to the police station.

He said that neither his mother nor other members of his family were allowed to go near the body.

“There is a possibility that my father could have died due to the physical assault by the police officials,” he alleged.

As per procedure, the judicial magistrate was informed. They visited the spot and informed the sub divisional magistrate, the senior police officer added. Constable Praveen has been suspended in connection with the incident while the assistant sub inspector, Gajender, has been sent to district lines.

The action has been taken against the officials for failing to escort the victim when he excused himself to drink water and instead jumped from the balcony.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to the police after post-mortem. Though post-mortem reports are awaited, prima facie the cause of death appears to be due to “fall from height,” police said.

Balraj is survived by his wife and three children including Rahul, Sunil, and a daughter, police added.
