New Delhi: Days after a businessman died after falling into an open drain, the BJP national secretary and Lok Sabha member from East Delhi, Maheish Girri, has written letters to lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal and the chief secretary requesting them to direct the PWD to cover all the drains in the city.

Appealing agencies to consider open drains as a serious issue, Mr Girri stated that the PWD should cover all the drains and also the Delhi Jal Board should reorganise all sewers. He also said that the PWD officials and the government will be responsible for any further deaths due to the same.

“Due to the negligence of the PWD, a man named Anil Agarwal drowned in a deep drain at Mayur Vihar Phase III. This is not the only case. Such incidents keep happening on a daily basis. There are hundreds of drains which are either left open or have broken slabs. During monsoons, dirty water overflows in these drains,” said Mr Girri. He also alleged that the PWD is not taking its work and accountability seriously.

“The Delhi government is not at all worried about these issues. The head of the government is not interested in delivering work but only believes in unnecessary talks and giving empty promises. He is not at all serious in addressing public interest issues. On one hand it is the monsoon season and on the other, most of the  city drains are yet to be cleaned,” he added.
