DCW comes to aid of deserted newly-wed girl
Right after the court marriage on May 24, the groom took her to the gurdwara and later fled.
New Delhi: A 21-year-old Delhi girl was deserted by her groom at the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib near Connaught Place. Her husband, two years older to her, lives in his parents’ house in Northwest Delhi’s Shakurpur area, according to the law enforcement agencies.
Deepika (name changed) was denied entry into the house after her marriage last week. Her mother-in-law told her that the house was too small. She was taken in only after intervention by the police and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). She had married the man with whom she had been in a relationship for the past three years.
Right after the court marriage on May 24, her groom took her to the gurdwara instead of his house.
They stayed there till evening after which her husband fled the place. The newly-wed bride waited for her husband for sometime but when she realised that he wasn’t coming back, she called the women’s helpline number — 181. She even informed her parents. Deepika is a resident of West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar area.
The DCW team took her to the nearest police station. Her family also reached the police station after a while.
“Deepika informed the DCW counsellor that she went to her matrimonial house, but they refused to let her in saying that the house is very small and they cannot accommodate her. She said that she is confident that her husband is in the house but they are denying her entry into the house,” a statement by the women’s body said.
“The boy and his family were called to the police station. The DCW counsellor counselled the boy and his family. She explained that since they are legally married now, they should accept the girl into their house. The boy’s family agreed to take the girl with them,” the statement added.
The DCW team visited the newly-wed’s matrimonial house two days after Deepika was accepted by her in-laws.
