New Delhi: In a bid to counter any possible terror threat, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is all set to procure 1,886 bullet resistant jackets for protection. The force has floated a tender for procuring these bulletproof jackets.

The paramilitary force, which is responsible for the safety and security of airports across the nation, has around 1,000 bulletproof jackets at present. The sources said that CISF has been asking to replace the jackets, which are being used by them at present, as these jackets are not capable to protect them from bullets fired from sophisticated weapons such as AK-47 assault rifles used by the terrorists and gunshots fired at point blank range.

Sources said the bulletproof jackets that the Central Industrial Security Force uses currently were procured in 2011 and a gunshot, if fired from close range, is capable of piercing the jacket and hurting a person. According to sources, the order is likely to be completed by mid 2019. The home ministry guideline says that the bulletproof jackets should be replaced in every five years.

The new bulletproof jackets will always have more advantages and safety and security for its users.

According to sources, the bureau of civil aviation (BCAS) will be testing some of the latest bulletproof technologies available before making the switch.

Earlier in June, the CISF asked for new bulletproof jackets for its personnel deployed at airports as the current jackets are incapable of withstanding bullets fired from AK 47 assault rifles.

In April, an audit conducted by the paramilitary agency made a shocking revelation related to the security of the airports and safety of passengers. Airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Cochin, and Hyderabad are equipped with bomb detection and diffusal squads. However, airports in rest of the country don’t have the important security equipment.
