New Delhi: The Delhi police on Tuesday launched “Bicycle Patrols’ at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

MoS Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, who was the chief guest of the programme, flagged off the first batch of 65 bicycles allotted to the eastern range of Delhi. Many dignitaries like MP Manoj Tiwari graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

Present at the occasion was city police chief Amulya Patnaik along with hundreds of police officers and thousands of residents.

As a green initiative for patrolling parks, congested lanes and bylanes and cooperative societies, the Delhi police has introduced bicycle patrols to complement and supplement its existing motorcycle and PCR patrols, which focus mainly on crime prevention along the arterial and main roads of Delhi.

According to the police, cycle patrols can go where traditional patrol vehicles cannot. The bicycle patrols will reach narrow and heavily congested areas where mechanised vehicles find it difficult to reach and maintain a steady presence.
