The apex court order banning all liquor shops on national as well state highways has put a seal of approval on total prohibition enforced by the Nitish Kumar government, a JD(U) spokesperson claimed.

Nagpur: The alleged liquor mafia on Tuesday killed an on duty police sub inspector (PSI) of Nagbhid police station in the ‘dry’ Chandrapur district by crushing him down under their car when they were trying to escape inspection carried out by police.

An SUV transporting liquor crushed PSI Chhatrapati Chide, who was on duty along with four other police personnel. They were conducting a routine check on vehicles against illegal transportation of liquor on the Gosikhurd canal road near Maushi-Chorgao village, in Chandrapur district where the sale and consumption of liquor is prohibited.

The outrageous incident occurred around 8.30 am on Tuesday when the police were expecting a large scale smuggling of illegal substance. The driver of the car fled the spot immediately along with his vehicle without giving any medical help to the injured police officer. PSI Chide was rushed to a hospital in Bramhapuri where he succumbed to his injuries

Chandrapur was the first district in Maharashtra to ban the sale and consumption of liquor. However, sources claim that the mafia in the district smuggle liquor from different parts of the state.

Police said young PSI Chide tried to stop the car carrying liquor.  But instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver increased the speed of it, dashed Chide and crushed him under the wheels killing him on the spot. The police are investigating the incident.

Apart from Chandrapur, Wardha, a place associated with Mahatma Gandhi, and Gadchiroli have also been declared ‘dry’ districts by the state government.
