Sambhaji Bhide's remarks cause row

Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced an investigation into certain controversial remarks made by Shiv Pratishthan leader Sambhaji Bhide, where he allegedly said that the teachings of Manusmruti were superior to those of revered saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram.

The leader of the Oppo-sition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil raised objection to the alleged remarks in the Asse-mbly, asking the government to reveal its stand on the issue. NCP leader Ajit Pawar demanded the arrest of Mr Bhide over his remarks.

Mr Fadnavis clarified that the government was bound by the constitution and that it respected the teachings of revered saints like Dynan-eshwar and Tukaram. He said that the government did not support the Manusmruti and announced a probe into the alleged remarks. Mr Fadnavis said that if it was found that Mr Bhide had said anything unconstitutional, action would be taken as per the law.

He further said that earlier, people flaunting weapons used to welc-ome waris carrying the padukas of these saints. From last year however, the police and district administration had prohibited this while allowing everybody adarshan of these palanquins.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar condemned Mr Bhide’s rem-arks and demanded action against him. Mr Vikhe-Patil said that Mr Bhide’s remarks did not bode well for peace in society.
