IT engineer jumps to death in Pune
He had joined the company just three days ago and had worked for only 12 hours.
Pune: A 25-year-old IT engineer, Gauda Gopalkrishna Durgaprasad, committed suicide at a hotel in Pune, citing job insecurity in the profession. He was working for Titney Bowes, IT Park in Vimannagar.
He had joined the company just three days ago and had worked for only 12 hours.
According to sources, Durgaprasad jumped to his death on Wednesday from the balcony of his hotel room in Fortune Hotel, Vimananagar, where he had been put up by company till he found his own accommodation in the city.
It seems that Durgaprasad had also tried to slice his wrists, as there were more than 25 marks on it.
D.N. Jaisingkar, assistant police inspector, Vimantal police station, said, “The hotel manager discovered his body in a pool of blood at the premises and informed the cops. We immediately reached the hotel and shifted him to a nearby hospital for treatment. But he was declared dead on arrival.
Durgaprasad left behind a suicide note which said, “There is no job security left in the IT field. This field is no more sustainable in respect of jobs. I don’t know how I am going to feed my family. Nobody is responsible for my actions.”
The Forum for IT Employees demanded that his death be probed and compensation awarded for his family.
Gopalkrishna belongs to the Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh, and had earlier worked as an engineer in Hyderabad and Delhi before joining the Pune based firm. “He was hardworking, and a peaceful and helpful guy. He did not have bad habits. We are unable to understand why he committed suicide,” said Venkatrao Murthy, a close relative.
The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) demanded that Gopalkrishna’s death be probed and compensation awarded for his family.
Elavarasan Raja, coordinator, Maharashtra Chapter, FITE, said, “IT employees working in metro cities belong to a rural background and their suicide affects their entire families. It is high time the government intervenes in this matter. Whenever the trend of layoffs take place in the IT sector, you will find the employees under pressure.”
He also added, “Unethical practices by IT companies, like work pressure, terminations, work overload, threatening employees could lead to suicides. We have begun to approach IT companies asking them about the measures they are taking to curb this. We also help families of suicide victims to get proper compensation from the companies. In the last six months, three IT engineers, including this one, have committed suicide. We are helping their families to get their rights.”
