Pune: A schoolteacher has been booked for allegedly thrashing a six-year-old Class 1 boy severely for misspelling a word she had dictated in the classroom on Saturday. As a result of the beating he received, the child, Sumit Chavan, sustained injuries to the head and had to be admitted to the hospital. Sumit’s father, Ravindra Chavan (33), approached the police against the teacher, Isha, after which a case was registered.

Sumit, a resident of Indrayaninagar, Pimpri Chinchwad, studies at the Samartha English Medium School.

Ajay Bhosale, police inspector, Bhosari, said, “Ravindra Chavan was taking his son home after school got over on Saturday afternoon. Sumit told him that Isha had beaten him up as he had misspelled a word. First she shouted at him and later she hit his head with a duster. She did not stop there but again slammed his head on a bench two to three times.”

He added, “when Chavan looked at his son’s head he found bumps and that some part of it had turned black and blue due to blood clotting. He immediately admitted him to DY Patil Hospital in Pimpri. And later lodged FIR against teacher Isha. We have filed complaint under Indian Penal Code 324 for causing hurt.” The school authorities have refrained from commenting on the incident.
