Kolkata: The body of a 22-year-old girl was recovered from inside her room in a club in the city’s Survey Park area where she was working as a trainee, police said on Monday.

Purnima Debnath (17) had been working as a management trainee in the beverage section at Eastern Metropolitan Club in Kalikapur for the past two months, her colleagues said. She hailed from Balurghat in South Dinajpur and was pursuing a course in hotel management from ITI.

Deputy commissioner of police (south suburban) Badana Varun Chandra Sekhar said, “She had locked herself inside the room since Sunday afternoon. When repeated calls went unanswered, authorities broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling.”

The body has been sent for post-mortem. Mr Chandra Sekhar added that although no suicide note was found, some writings recovered from her room were being scrutinised.

“She was found to be in a relationship with a colleague but there was some problem between them, the officer said, adding that her mother alleged she was murdered.
