West Bengal: Woman killed, 2 injured as man opens fire at wedding

Kolkata: A woman was shot dead while two others, including a teenager girl were injured during a wedding reception at Asansol in Burdwan on Saturday evening. The victim, Anita Bauri, had suffered bullet injuries on her back.

A video footage, apparently taken on a cellphone, aired on a TV news channel, showed her falling down after being hit by the bullet. The shooting took place as she was dancing in a group of women along with other guests amidst loud music during the celebration.

It was at around 8 pm, and the celebration of Sagar Bauri’s wedding reception was underway at his home in Kankrashole village. The function was at its peak with a crowd of guests. Suddenly, Alok Sai, one of them, took out a revolver and opened fire, leaving three persons injured.

Sai is the friend and colleague of Kishan Bauri, brother of Sagar. After the firing, Alok tried to flee from the venue. He was however caught by angry guests who thrashed him before handing him over to the police. Having suffered injuries, Alok was admitted to a hospital. He faces arrest on murder charge.

Anita, Kishan and Lakshmi Bauri suffered bullet injuries. The three injured were rushed to Asansol District Hospital. While Anita was declared brought dead there, Kishan, with bullet injuries in his stomach, was shifted to a private hospital after his condition worsened. Anita was the relative of the two brothers.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (detective department) of the Asansol Durgapur police commissionerate Joy Tudu said, “Three persons were injured in the firing. They were rushed to a hospital. One of them, a woman, was declared brought dead.” Preliminary investigation revealed that Alok and Kishan, who work at the same place consumed alcohol before the event and had an altercation between them. According to sources, Alok had recently become jealous of Kishan as the latter had earned his boss’s praise for his performance at work.
