Anoushka Shankar to perform at Indo-British art fest
Musician to go live during screening of a 1928 silent-era film Shiraz.
Kolkata: Anoushka Shankar will perform live music during the screening of a silent era film called “Shiraz”, dating back to 1928, as part of an Indo-British unique art show here.
It will be followed by a dance recital by Company Wayne McGregor. The British Council in collaboration with Sangit Kala Mandir will celebrate the rich cultural heritage shared by the two countries in the UK-India Year of Culture 2017, director, British Council, East India, Debanjan Chakrabarti, said.
“By showcasing two iconic art presentations — the screening of “Shiraz” on November 3 with the live performance of a youth icon like Anoushka Shankar and performance of Wayne McGregor on November 10 with cutting edge modern technology — we wish to highlight how rich cultural traditions are linked with contemporariness,” he said.
“Shiraz” has a cast of Himansu Rai (Shiraz), Charu Roy (Prince Khurram/Emperor Shah Jahan), Enakshi Rama Rau (Selima/Empress Mumtaz Mahal), Seeta Devi (Dalia), directed by Victor Peers and a British Instructional Films production.
Wanyne Mc Gregor is a multi-award winning British choreographer and director, internationally known for his innovations in contemporary dance. Company Wayne McGregor, an ensemble of highly skilled dancers, retains his distinctive visual style.
Company Wayne McGregor will present FAR, an acclaimed dance production, which includes a multimedia backdrop of 3200 LED lights that dance.
The Sangit Kala Mandir, a platform to promote music, art, culture and founded by renowned industrialist B.K. Birla in 1945, has a long association with the British Council.
