Kolkata: A homemaker was allegedly murdered by her in-laws in Rajarhat, who set her on fire, for failing to give birth to a male child. Fatema Bibi (34), the victim, was married to Asgar Ali at Panapukur 15 years ago. Since marriage, her in-laws started demanding dowry.
She meanwhile gave birth to four daughters which left her in-laws furious. She was subjected to mental torture by them about why she was yet to deliver a male child, according to her family.
On Friday afternoon Fatema’s mother and a relative visited her in-laws house after getting a call from one of her neighbours.
Local residents heard Fatema screaming in pain at around 4 pm. When they tried to enter the house, Fatema’s in-laws resisted them. They then informed the police and Fatema’s family. Meanwhile her in-laws fled. When Fatema’s mother and relative entered her in-laws’ house, they found her lying dead with severe burn injuries.
The victim’s hands and legs were tied with a rope from behind. She was declared brought dead at a hospital.
Her family lodged a complaint at the Rajarhat police station against eight of her in-laws includng Asgar.
The body was sent for post-mortem. At night Fatema’s family members demonstrated at the police station demanding arrest of the culprits.
