Kolkata: A teenager succumbed on Sunday after a week-long battle with the injuries she sustained after her suicide attempt. She had taken the extreme step after reportedly being gangraped by some local youths at Gaighata in North 24 Parganas. The 16-year-old girl died at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) early on Sunday. The body was sent for post-mortem.
On July 28 night, the student was returning home on her cycle after her private tuition through Moyna when five youths, who were drinking at the roadside, took her away forcibly and raped her by turns in a room. The victim later walked home crying. She remained silent to her mothers repeated questions about what had happened. She tried to commit suicide by hanging herself at her home the next morning.
She was rushed to the Habra state general, from where she was shifted to RGKMCH after her condition worsened. Her elder sister alleged, “Some youths including Golu and Gobinda used to disturb her often on road. I do not know what enmity they had with my sister.” No one has been arrested so far.
