14-yr-old hit by crane on way to school, dies

Kolkata: A girl was run over while her friend was injured after the cycle in which they were going to school was hit by a crane in Taratala on Saturday.

Agitated over her death, a mob vandalised the offending vehicle and a public bus. 

Two cops were injured when they were assaulted by the violent mob which also blocked road. 

The victim, Suhani Gupta (14), was a resident of Sukdebpur at Maheshtala. She was a Class 8 student of Alipore Takshal Vidyapeath. 

At around 8.30 am Suhani and her classmate: Anjali Mahato (14), a resident of Jinjirabazar were travelling in a cycle to reach school. A heavy crane dashed their cycle near a biscuit factory. 

With fatal injuries Suhani was rushed to SSKM Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

A group of around 200 local residents burst in anger. They damaged the crane and a CTC bus which was passing by the spot. Traffic was disrupted during the peak-hour. 

Two traffic sergeants: Amirul Hoque and Prosenjit Sandhukhan of the South West Traffic Guard were assaulted by the angry locals.

The two damaged vehicles were taken away by the police and a case was initiated.
