Molten steel accident: Toll rises to four

The incident took place at around 4 am when work was underway at the steel melting shop.

Kolkata: The death toll in the accident at SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant in Burdwan West rose to four as two more workers succumbed to injuries on Sunday. The two other victims were Shankar Nag and Sanjit Chatterjee.

They succumbed to their injuries at a private hospital in Durgapur in the morning and afternoon respectively. Their bodies were sent for post mortem. Two more workers are undergoing treatment there with severe burns. Their condition is stated to be critical.

On Saturday, two contract workers Shahnawaz Sheikh (23) and Ashis Sikka (25) died, while seven others were injured after hot molten steel fell on them. The incident took place at around 4 am when work was underway at the steel melting shop.

SAIL has already ordered an inquiry into the incident. According to the PSU company, the accident took place “due to splashing of molten steel out of a ladle that was being placed on the turret of a caster in steel melting shop.”
